For another pre-lockdown 2.0 treat, we managed to squeeze in an overnight trip to Archerfield House in Dirleton, North Berwick. I’m no stranger to Archerfield, popping in to catch up with friends for a coffee or some lunch and to visit their spa. It was great this time though to get to spend the night. Normally the house is rented out as a whole for weddings and parties, but you can book individual rooms in the pavilion suites. Since they were opening up the house for individual bookings we decided to treat ourselves.
You can’t deny the drive up to Archerfield House is impressive! Upon arrival we were greeted by the staff and with a swift check in where shown to our room (or should I say suite!) on the top floor, with lovely views over the golf course. The room was substantial, with a massive bed, and seating area for about 4 people. We were left a little gin cocktail and some delicious chocolates to enjoy before dinner.
After enjoying the gin and chocolates we peeled ourselves away from our very comfortable room, downstairs to the dining room. Normally dinner is served in the clubhouse, but because of covid they were serving it in the main house. The menu gave us a lot of tasty options (but no alcohol allowed still!) . For starter we choose the Cheese Souffle and the Scallops, both delicious dishes, and light enough for a starter. For main we both had the same – Steak, chips and onion rings, and look at the size of those chips! Steak cooked to perfection and the chips were crispy and fluffy. I was the only one that managed any kind of dessert, so kept it simple with some ice cream, sometimes you just need something sweet to complete a meal!
Since they couldn’t serve alcohol, we were able to take a bottle of wine to our room, and before we did that we had a quick nosey around the house! A lovely cosy looking drawing room, where I can imagine curling up and reading a book with a glass of wine, and a very ornate hallway on the first floor!
The next morning we were woken by a deep red / orange sunrise, partly because we didn’t close the curtains properly! But it was truly lovely and as the sky lightened up we had a great view over the golf course with North Berwick Law in the distance. Breakfast was served in the Clubhouse, so we took a wander down to stretch our legs, its about a 5-7 minute walk or you could drive!
The selection was great for breakfast, you could have cereal, pastries, full cooked breakfast, if you wanted you could have feasted pretty well! Since we were planning a walk we thought it best to be sensible – ish! We had tea, coffee, juice and cereal to start and then kept it simple with a cooked breakfast and eggs benedict. For the first time ever I would say, I turned down a pastry basket!
After we walked back to our room, let breakfast digest, it was hard to check out! We had such a lovely relaxed stay and would thoroughly recommend booking a night or two as a treat to get away from it all or a special occasion. I am looking forward to being able to stay in hotels again, Archerfield may just be my first stop!
