I’m always on the hunt for a wee night or weekend away from city life, somewhere comfortable, with good food and preferably a spa (though the latter is not a deal breaker)!
It’s just nice to get away from the norm, particularly in these more challenging times we find ourselves in. So, a friend and I took a trip to Fonab Castle Hotel & Spa during a time when we could travel a little more freely! This was my second visit, her first, and it certainly didn’t disappoint either of us.
Fonab Castle is about 90 minutes drive from Edinburgh in Perthshire, outside the well known town of Pitlochry. The Hotel sits perched above the River Tummel at Loch Faskally with a view out over the spectacular Ben Vrackie, a perfect peaceful setting for a bit of time away.
Our trip started with a visit to The Woodland Spa for a massage and time to relax. Upon arrival our temperatures were checked and we were given towels and robes to change into.
We then took some time in the pool and jacuzzi before moving through to the relaxation room to await our treatment – a 60 minute massage. The treatment rooms itself was cosy and relaxing and even the massage table was heated. The massage was really good and both of us returned to the relaxation room like zombies, it took a lot to move us of the sofas!
It was now time to check into the hotel, so we got changed and headed over. We were greeted with a warm welcome, an easy check-in and then a short tour of the hotel with the concierge who told us a brief history of the castle and showed us where everything was. We had booked a Woodland Suite, which was lovely. There was a separate bedroom and living room, as well as two bathrooms and balconies! Even though it had been raining we managed to sit outside and enjoy some fizz in fading light.
Unfortunately, at that time in Scotland we couldn’t have a drink in the hotel bar or with dinner, which was a shame as the bar is very comfortable and has great views over Loch Faskally. We ate dinner in the Brasserie that evening, although they do have a fine dining restaurant called Sandemans (named after the original owners), I will just have to try that the next time!
Dinner was lovely and relaxed, we tried a couple of their mocktails, which were lovely. For starter I had a very tasty and garlicky hummus and my friend had the beetroot and goats cheese salad. For main, I went with Braised Ox cheek and mashed potato and my friend had the Chicken, both delicious dishes. No dessert for us this time which is unusual, we were both full from the starters and main course. We took tea after our meal back up in the bar, before heading back to our room to enjoy our gifted bottle of wine.
The next morning we headed down for breakfast in the Brasserie and got a lovely seat by the window to take in the view and be entertained by a little red squirrel.
Breakfast is quite the feast, starting with a cake stand of breakfast goodies; fresh fruit, yogurt with lemon curd and granola and some mini danish pastries. For ‘main’ I had the French Toast with Bacon and Apple Compote which was tasty, the apples going well with the bacon and just the right amount. We had tea, juice and toast as well, a proper meal to set us up for the day ahead!
After checking out of the hotel we went on a walk round Loch Faskally (maps can be picked up from the concierge), got caught in some rain and enjoyed a little sunshine too.
Before leaving Fonab, we decided to enjoy a well deserved hot chocolate back up in the bar, though it was far too comfortable and thoughts of “shall we see if they have a room for the night” were had!
Fonab Castle Hotel and Spa is a great spot of a night or weekend away, within easy driving distance of Edinburgh and Glasgow. We are already planning our weekend trip in the new year!
