Since lockdown has eased and we are allowed to travel a bit more freely around our own countries (though I could really do with some sunshine!) we have been taking short breaks and the odd random day trip. Our first random trip seen us take an overnight stop in Fort William before heading out onto the Ardnamurchan Peninsula. We stayed at The Garrison Hotel just as you come into Fort William, on the site of the old police station. They even have the cells done up as bunk rooms for weary walkers! It was clean, good Covid protocols and handy for walking to the various hostelries in the town.
However, for dinner we did stumble across this lovely pub – Garrison West, tucked up the side of the Old Cinema in the centre of town. Again, good Covid procedures, but also not intrusive and very friendly. We were seated through the back in the conservatory and naturally cocktails were consumed to start the evening off!
Having peeked at the menu in advance, I was looking forward to having langoustines for my dinner, and thought about them the whole way there. Unfortunately, my plans were scuppered as they were sold out! My disappointment didn’t last long after tucking into my alternative starter of Scallops and Pork Belly (which did come with black pudding, but that was swiftly put on himself’s plate!). Meanwhile, himself tucked into a bowl of tasty mussels, and naturally I got a chance to dunk some bread in the sauce!
For mains, we settled on the same thing – Monkfish Scampi. It was crisp and light and very, very tasty. Naturally we also had to have some dessert, I went for the Honeycomb Parfait with Raspberry Puree, and he had the Chefs Cheesecake, which was on this occasion honeycomb flavoured.
We had a lovely evening at The Garrison West, which continued on with a few more cocktails until we spilled out into the balmy evening air! Would definitely recommend The Garrison West for some food if passing through Fort William.
